Elagin Palace
Detailed description
The Elagin Palace is located on the eastern part of Elagin Island and is part of the cultural heritage of federal significance. In 1818-1822, according to the design of architect Carl Rossi, a palace was built in the classical style for Alexander I's mother, Maria Feodorovna. In January 1942, the palace was destroyed during the bombing. From 1952 to 1960, it was restored by architect Plotnikov. In 2018-2019, the ceiling and frieze, architectural stucco decoration, Vestal sculptures, doors veneered with Karelian birch and the mirror frame of the main lobby were restored, which were recreated in accordance with the original design. The Yelaginoostrovsky Palace has a unique collection of Russian decorative and applied art, which has been formed over the years. It is based on the works created by the great architect, master of interior and decorative arts Carl Rossi.
