The apartment house of L.F. Volkenstein
Detailed description
At the beginning of the 20th century, Lev Volkenstein, a well-known lawyer and friend of Anton Chekhov, was the owner of the apartment building. According to rumors, the famous author often visited this house. At the time of the purchase of the house in 1890, it was one-story. The building, which was nationalized by the Soviet government in the 1930s, was reconstructed, resulting in a three-story structure. Since 1943, it has housed the Azov-Donetsk Shipping Company, and after the war, houses for workers. A three-storey building built in the Art Nouveau style: with a round decorative tower, ceremonial decoration of the commercial floor and simpler living rooms. The windows of the first floor are made in the form of an arch, and the place of one of the openings from Gazetny Lane is occupied by the heraldic shield of the Volkenstein family.
