Merchant P.Ya. Bekel's house
Detailed description
The house was built in the early 80s of the 19th century by architect F.K. Punshel, commissioned by industrialist P.J. Bekel. Bekel was a merchant of the second guild and engaged in coal mining. The mansion was originally three-storied. Two more floors were added in 1932. This building housed both Beckel's respectable apartment and his office. Some of the premises were leased to large industrial enterprises in St. Petersburg for trade representation. Materials and interior items were specially brought for the construction of the mansion. For example, bricks for cladding were delivered from the Hoffmann factory in Silesia. In 1919, the Hydrological Institute was founded, which is located, among other things, in the Bekel house. The building is a monument of architecture and urban planning of regional importance. The stairs, stained glass windows, ceiling lights and fireplaces have survived to this day in good condition.
