Description

* Navarino Square is a public space located in the city center of Athens, Greece. It is named after the Battle of Navarino, which took place near this area in 1827. The battle was a joint naval battle between the fleets of Great Britain, France and Russia against the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. It was the last and decisive battle of the Greek War of Independence. The square was built in the late 19th century as part of a larger project to beautify Athens during the Neoclassical period. The project was initiated by King George I in 1862.
