* Once the only bridge over the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge marks the site of the first settlement on the island, called Rivus Altus (high shore). This stone arch, built in 1588, about 150 years after the collapse of the previous wooden bridge, is a passage between two busy streets. The bridge is the middle of the Grand Canal.
