Description

* The Church of the Holy Apostles in Thessaloniki is a cross-domed basilica dedicated to the twelve Apostles. It is believed that the church was built in the 12th century, but after the discovery of the monograms of Patriarch Niphon I, the construction dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. The church was the main temple of the monastery, which was closed during the Turkish conquest. The architecture of the church includes a cruciocoled temple with four arches and a gallery around the perimeter. The interior is richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes from the Paleologian era. The mosaics of the dome and arches are realistic and use a wide range of colors. The frescoes mainly depict scenes from the life of the Virgin and John the Baptist.
