Stroganov Manor
Description
Creator: Peter Semenovich Sadovnikov
Architectural style: Classic
* The Stroganov Estate is an example of Russian classicism architecture. The manor was built by Countess Sofia Vladimirovna Stroganova between 1824 and 1828. The Stroganovs were an outstanding Russian family that conducted business in the Urals and Siberia. They were engaged in salt and iron mining, as well as timber and fur trading. Nizhny Novgorod was an important place for the Stroganovs, as it was here that their salt warehouses were located, and they traded at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. The architect responsible for the design of the Stroganov estate was Pyotr Semenovich Sadovnikov, a fortress architect. The main house of the estate is a cubic volume that serves as the compositional core of the ensemble. The elongated volumes of the wings limit the space of the courtyard, creating a sense of isolation. High stone fences with gates and passageways form a solid wall, which gives the estate an impressive character.
