Handrin 's Mansion
Description
* The mansion was built in 1870 by architect Tenishev, commissioned by businessman A.E. Khandrin, a highly respected citizen of Taganrog. After the revolution, the building was adapted by the city military commandant's office and in 1920 transferred to the city Committee, while sculptures and the noble coat of arms were removed from the facade. Later, the building was used as an orphanage for street children and a music school. In 1976, after restoration work, the Khandrin mansion turned into the Taganrog Art Gallery. The building is one and a half storeys high and has a unique, expressive decoration on the facade, in which elements of Classicism, Baroque and Renaissance can be observed. The capitals of the Corinthian order, columns with flutes and a pediment were crowned by sculptural groups that have been lost to date, and above the main entrance was the noble coat of arms of the Khandrin family. The interior of the building is also rich in decorative molding and is distinguished by its exquisite decoration: large chandeliers, tiled fireplaces, parquet floors and oak doors. Even the carriage house, which has been preserved to this day, is distinguished by its picturesque architecture.
