History of Jewish community in Tallinn
From 90€ per group
Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 2 hours
* We will start our walk by exploring the history of the Jews of Tallinn. We will talk about how they appeared in Estonia in the first place. The fact is that, unlike Latvia and even more so Lithuania, Estonia was located outside the pale of settlement. That is, Jewish settlements in this area were prohibited.
We will look at all the places of Jewish residence in chronological order. First, let's go to the medieval Old Town, walk along the ancient cobbled streets and find traces of Jews there. Then we will move to the Jewish quarter of pre-war Tallinn. An amazingly beautiful choral synagogue was built there in the 19th century. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the war. Finally, let's get acquainted with the modern Jewish quarter.
During our walk, I will tell you how Jews and Estonians live together, what Europe's most modern synagogue looks like, and what cultural autonomy in Estonia means. In addition, we will talk about the times of the USSR, when many Jews from the interior of the country tried to move to Estonia. I will tell you what attracted them, and why the city of Pärnu, located on the Baltic Sea coast, was called a Jewish resort in Soviet times.
The final theme of our walk will be the Holocaust in Estonia. We will visit the Jewish Cemetery and talk about these terrible events there. A monument to the victims of the Holocaust has been erected in the cemetery. It is a pyramid made of individual stones, symbolizing the people who died at the hands of the Nazis. The tour includes a visit to the Jewish Museum.
