Castle of Ioannina
Description
* Ioannina Castle is a fortified old town in northwestern Greece, founded in the 6th century. The castle has been reconstructed in different periods, including the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. During the Ottoman period, the castle was reconstructed by Ali Pasha, who made it his main residence. The castle has two citadels: the northeast and the southeast, which were built in different periods. The southeastern citadel, known as Its Kale, was completely rebuilt and became the main residence of Ali Pasha. Its Kale housed a palace, which was rebuilt and served as the administrative center of the city until 1870. Currently, the castle houses the Museum of Byzantium, the Museum of Silversmithing and the Museum of Weapons.
