Description

Creator: Holy places: the place of baptism, Mount Nebo, the Mosaic city of Madaba
* During 2010, more than 200,000 pilgrims and tourists visited the site of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River, located on the territory of modern Jordan. When you go on a trip to holy places, it doesn't matter whether it's Christian shrines, Muslim or the holy places of the Tumba-Yumba tribe, the place where John the Baptist (the Forerunner) baptized Jesus almost two thousand years ago is located much further south than where you are now. It is currently located on the territory of Jordan, near the northern tip of the Dead Sea. Once a year, on the feast of Epiphany, when the Jordanians open the border, tens of thousands of pilgrims come here for a festive ceremony held by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Over the past two millennia, Jordan has changed: the climate has become different; after leaving Kinneret, from which at least a quarter of the volume of water is currently being withdrawn annually, it has become much shallower; water intake for agricultural needs, etc., etc. (including difficulties of access to the Jordanian territory) — led to the fact that another place was chosen for the baptism of pilgrims, at the source of the river from Kinneret. Mount Nebo is located at 817 m above sea level. According to the fifth book of Moses, Deuteronomy, on Mount Nebo, the Lord showed the prophet Moses to the promised land: "And Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan." Mount Nebo is the highest point of the area, offering magnificent views of the Dead Sea, the Judean Mountains and the Jordan Valley on a clear day. This is one of the most revered holy places in Jordan — it is believed that the prophet Moses died and was buried here. From the height of the mountain, you can see the panorama of the Holy Land that Moses once saw: the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho and Jerusalem. To the east of the Jordan River are the ancient Moabite plains. The first Christians made pilgrimages to Mount Nebo. At the end of the 4th century
