* Cape Velikan, a natural monument that received its status in 1990, is located in the Korsakovsky district on the eastern coast of the Tonino-Aniva Peninsula.
It is believed that Ivan Krusenstern gave the cape its name. On his ship Nadezhda, he explored the southeastern coast of Sakhalin, surveyed the coast. Sailing past Cape Giant, Kruzenstern was delighted by the beauty and grandeur of the rocks, giving them the appropriate name. According to another version, the name came from a transformation of the Japanese word "Werikan". This is exactly what the Japanese called this cape during the occupation of the south of the island.
Along the entire coast from Cape Bird to Cape Giant there are many grottos created by wind and sea waves, caves, arches and pillars standing right in the sea, on which bird colonies are located. These stone giants are located in cozy coves, the sandy strip of the coast of which rests on rocks covered with a continuous impenetrable taiga.
The place is remote, but in dry weather it is easily accessible and is popular with both Sakhalin residents and guests. There are always many people who want to admire the local beauties.
