Pamukkale Tour-Hieropolis and Laodicea
From $400 per group
Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 9 hours
* Pamukkale is a locality in Turkey with geothermal springs, which have no analogues anywhere in the world. The complex of 17 mineral springs, known since ancient times, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Mineral water heated by the bowels of the earth, whose temperature ranges from +30 to +100 °C, has been flowing down the slopes of the plateau for thousands of years, forming travertines — small natural pools of bizarre shape with limestone sides.
Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish and it really looks like a huge mountain of cotton. This natural phenomenon was formed due to the strongest earthquakes that shifted rocks and formed faults through which groundwater rushed to the surface.
There is another attraction on the territory of Pamukkale — the Cleopatra Pool. This is a man-made thermal pool that has existed since the time of the Roman Empire.
The current appearance of the pool was recreated in the 60s of the 20th century. The maximum depth of the pool is 3 meters, the water temperature is around +36 °.
In the second century, the Romans built the city of Hierapolis next to the travertines, which later became a resort. In 2012, archaeologists found the grave of St. Philip's Basilica, and a year later they discovered the cave of Pluto, a place considered in ancient times to be the entrance to the Underworld.
Laodicea is one of the most important cities of Phyrigia. This is not the most famous place among tourists, so there are never crowds there. However, the city and its church are famous for being mentioned in the Bible and for the well-preserved frescoes of the 4th century A.D. in the Laodicean Church.
