Today we have a rather long journey ahead of us, the route of which is laid out through the most picturesque places – from the peaks where we lived, through the Alagirsky district, and further to the Tseysky gorge.
On the way, we will visit another place of Power, Mount Monk. Monk Mountain is the motionless and stern guardian of Cei. It is similar in shape to a skufya (a round cap made of velvet, the headdress of Orthodox monks). Monk Mountain rises 500 meters above the surrounding landscape. Its cliff below is covered with scree and overgrown with forest. From afar, the reddish rocks resemble a human face.
The face image is not the work of a human, but the result of the action of water and wind in the tiled sandstones.
Next, the group will descend to the Tsei Alpine Camp, and then, leaving their belongings, they will make a radial hike to the Sanctuary of Rekom and Mady Mairam.
The widely known Ossetian sanctuary of Rekom was a deity who was invoked for healing from diseases, infertility and protection from evil forces. The cult of reverence for the River was widespread in the Alagir gorge and the holiday dedicated to the River was celebrated in July. The sanctuary of Rekom was the center of the Uastyrdzhi cult, which was the patron saint of men.
Since Uastyrji patronizes only men, women have no right to approach the sanctuary. Therefore, the women go in the other direction, to the women's sanctuaries located to the side.
"Mady Mayram" is the holy place of the Mother of God. A small cubic log house, covered with thick boards and stones, on a pile of stones. Worshippers place their offerings through a square hole. Turian horns are piled at the foot. The log house is surrounded by a small courtyard.
There are two Mayram shrines here: a small one and a bigger one a little further away. Women who want to have children go to pray to both Mayras. The little one prays for the gift of girls, and the bigger one prays for the gift of both boys and girls.
Boris Basiev, the guardian of the sanctuary, said: "There are often cases when there have been no children in the family for decades. Then they came here, prayed, and sons and daughters were born in the family."
