Route: Monument to Empress Elizabeth The Swedish Fortress A walk in the port The Western Fort The Old Lunette Museum Baltiysk is the westernmost city in Russia, where the main naval base of the Baltic Fleet is located. The city used to be called Pillau. It is located 50 km from Kaliningrad in the northern part of the Baltic Spit – on the Pallava Peninsula. The Bay of Gdansk is located to the west of the city, while the freshwater Kaliningrad Bay lies on the other side. Our tour will start with a walk along the Marine Boulevard, we will reach the northern pier to the monument of Empress Elizabeth, which is the largest monument of a woman on horseback in the world. Here we will focus primarily on the events of the Seven Years' War, when this part of East Prussia became part of the Russian Empire for 4 years. Going up to the observation deck, you will have a wonderful view of the Baltic Spit, the ships standing in the roadstead, as well as the entire western coast. Then we will make a stop near the Swedish fortress, the construction of which began in 1626 by order of the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus II. The fortress is a pentagon in the form of a star with sides of 80 meters, where there is a bastion in each corner. A wide moat filled with water has been dug around the fortress. She has always performed military functions, and a military unit is still located on the territory of the fortress. We will continue exploring the Baltic Sea near the military harbor and see one of the main attractions of the city – swans, which live there in large numbers all year round. We will take a walk through the historical part of the city, where ancient buildings are still preserved: the Schinkel lighthouse, the complex of the German barracks "Heavenly Paradise", the former Reformed church, the courthouse and the water tower. Depending on the time of year and the weather, it is possible to take a sightseeing boat trip along the entire harbor with access to the Baltic Sea.
