* We will start our route with a visit to the Juditten Church, the oldest building in Kaliningrad, an outstanding example of 13th-century North German Gothic. It has always been considered a place of strength, attracting worshippers from all over Catholic and Lutheran Germany. You will find out what this power is during the tour. By examining and visiting the churches of Tarau, Domnau, Arnau, and Mühlhausen, you will learn how to determine the time of their construction, find an explanation for the modesty and grandeur of medieval temples, understand the reasons for the differences in temple construction in the west and east, and feel the skill level of architects of those times. We will visit the place where the song "Anhen from Tarau", the most popular in German-speaking countries, originated, and we will see the most amazing frescoes of the 17th century, the likes of which you may not have seen yet. On our way there will be the remains of the Friedland fortress and the formerly Catholic, but now Orthodox Church of St. George. From the height of its bell tower in 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte examined the fruits of his victory over the Russian army in the Battle of Friedland. We will also go up there to take a look at the beauty of the city with its surroundings and neighboring Poland. The Temple of Faith, Hope, Love and their Mother Sofia, built in Bagrationovsk in the 90s of the XX century, will become a kind of island of Russian architecture in the sea of Gothic on our route. And then there is the Teutonic castle of the XIV century Preussisch-Eylau with a well-preserved forburg and part of an earthen rampart. Restoration work is underway there now. It is said that a girl who leads tours of the castle during the day revives the souls of the Teutonic Knights at night by casting spells over medieval books by candlelight. Otherwise, how does she know so much about their lifestyle? Our journey through the history of Gothic architecture will culminate in a tour of magnificent examples of Neo-Gothic architecture: the buildings of the Royal Teachers Seminary (1861) and the Preussisch-Eylau District Administration (1901), as well as, upon our return to Kaliningrad, a tour of the magnificent Catholic church of the Holy Family in 1907.
