A special feature of Slovenia is the diversity of the landscape over short distances. For that reason, you can drink coffee in the morning in Bled, overlooking the highest Julian Alps and in the evening enjoy the sunset on the Slovenian coast. We start the trip with a visit to the medieval Bled Castle with a beautiful view of the lake and the island with the Church of the Assumption of Mary. At the castle you can enjoy your morning coffee and the famous local dessert Bled cream cheese cake (“Kremšnita”). We will drive around the lake and stop at the Vila Bled Hotel, which was once the annual residence of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. We will continue with a visit to the world landmark Postojna Cave. The most visited cave in Europe is also the largest cave of the classic Karst, with a 23-kilometer cave system. It is adorned with stalactites of fantastic shapes. There are stalagmites, stalactites, and formations called curtains or draperies that look like folded curtains. You will be impressed by the cave corridors, tunnels and halls and, of course, by the Postojna Cave home to the endemic olm or proteus. We visit the cave partly by electric train, partly on foot. Not far away is the famous Predjama Castle, the medieval home of the warrior knight Erasmus and is considered the most spectacular castle in Slovenia. It is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cave castle in the world. Predjama Castle has repeatedly been the scene of many documentaries and feature movies. Among them, the most prominent are the documentary-reality series by members of Ghost Hunters International and the movie Armor of God, starring action movie hero Jackie Chan. We will end our exploration of Slovenia with a visit to the seaside town of Piran with its rich history, Venetian architecture and fishing tradition.
