Apartment house of Peter Podbelsky
Detailed description
The construction of the apartment building took place in the 1880s. Pyotr Pavlovich Podbelsky is a lawyer and candidate of law, a member of the Cadet political party. Podbelsky was able to afford to build an apartment building, and Alexander Shcherbachev, the city's most famous architect, was hired to build it. In 1901, the house was completely rebuilt and became the tallest on the street. In addition to Peter Podbelsky, his son, Georgy Petrovich Podbelsky, also lived in the house. He was a member of the Association of Artists of Russia and initially painted under the pseudonym Tor. After the October Revolution, the Podbelskys' property was nationalized, including the house. Until 2018, the building slowly withered, cracked and collapsed, and then it was decided to restore it. Previously, the facade of the building featured native columns with Ionic capitals under the balconies, Atlantean figures in lion skins and caryatids, also supporting open balconies. Currently, everyone can admire the restored versions of the stucco and the refined facade of the house.
