Colosseum
Detailed description
Built under Emperor Vespasian in 70-72 AD and completed by his son Titus 10 years later, the Flavian Amphitheater, or Colosseum, is a massive stone arena that at its peak could accommodate 80,000 spectators. Just like in the movie Gladiator, the Colosseum hosted brutal screenings of gladiatorial fights and fights with wild animals, all to the delight of the crowd. The inauguration lasted one hundred days, and during the event, about 9,000 animals and 2,000 gladiators were killed.
