Archaeological Excavations of Kerameikos
Detailed description
The Athens Kerameikos district is located northwest of the Acropolis and includes a vast territory and the Eridanos River. The name of the area comes from the Ceramists' town square, where the potters were located. Archaeological excavations have been carried out in the area, but only a small part of ancient Deimos has been explored. The area was home to numerous cist graves and funerary offerings, as well as monuments along the Sacred Path. After the construction of the city wall in 478 BC, new city gates and monuments were built. During Roman rule, new monuments were erected in Athens, but little has been preserved. In 1870, archaeological excavations began in Kerameikos, which continue to this day.
