Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 3 hours
* A walking tour to the Peter and Paul Fortress is a great idea to get to know the place where a new page in the history of our country began.
On May 27, 1703, during the Northern War, a new fortress was founded on a small Hare Island. This day became the birthday of the city of St. Petersburg, which in a few years will become the new capital of the Russian state.
During the tour, we will talk about the history of the fortress, which was built according to the latest European fortification art. We'll find out how it functioned, how it was used, and who lived in it. Let's get acquainted with the main buildings on its territory, which now house numerous museums. You will find out why the fortress was called the Russian Bastille, where its prisoners were kept, and who of the famous personalities visited its casemates. To do this, we will visit the Trubetskoy Bastion prison, the main political prison of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Let's also take a look at the majestic Peter and Paul Cathedral, the tomb of the Romanov dynasty, in the very heart of the fortress. In addition, you will find out how many angels there were on the cathedral spire, what melodies the chimes play and where the cannon shoots from every day at exactly 12.00.
