Detailed description

The Museum of the Arctic was opened in 1930, in the building of the former St. Nicholas Church. It was built in the early 19th century. The museum itself was founded in November 1930. Initially, it had the status of a branch of the All-Union Arctic Institute. After that, it was transformed into the Institute for the Study of the North. After that, the museum received its own premises and prepared a permanent exhibition during the 30s of the last century. In 1998, the museum received the status of the Russian State Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic.
