* Welcome to my hometown of Split!
In 295, the Roman king Diocletian began and in 305 completed the construction of a palace on the site of today's city of Split. This is the same city and emperor that Gosha talked about in the movie "Moscow does not believe in tears." Everyone remembers the legendary scene from the film in which Gosha explains to Sashenka that not everyone wants to be a leader and who said: "If you saw what kind of cabbage I grew, you would stop trying to persuade me."
It all happened in Split. Of course, we won't find Diocletian's cabbage, but a well-preserved palace is. In Split, people live inside the museum, there are 300 of them, without an entrance ticket!
We will start from the southern part of the palace, where the port of the city is located, and immediately enter the basement. You don't need a ticket for this, because the palace is always open.
Game of Thrones, the scene where Daenerys trains dragons, was also filmed at this location.
The city is 1,717 years old, and the sphinx, which stands on the ancient Peristyle (main square), is 3,500 years old (Diocletian brought it from Egypt).
If you want to visit the former mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian, today it is the Cathedral of St. Douillet, to the temple of the god Jupiter and climb the bell tower, the entrance ticket costs 13 EUR. If you only want to visit the mausoleum and the temple, the price will be 9 EUR. Of course, you can do without it, because the whole palace is an open-air museum.
Let's see where the imperial summer veranda was, where the dining room was, and where the lobby was - a large round hall with a domed ceiling that led to the emperor's private chambers.
Let's talk about the unique facts of the Roman Empire of this period and why he became emperor.
It is very important to understand that the Western Roman Empire ended in Split with the death of Julius Nepos in 476. If we find this street where he was killed, it will be interesting to reconstruct this historical event.
Then we'll look at the new part of the palace/city, which was developed in the 13th century, on the site of the Iron Gate (in the Middle Ages it connected the old part of the city with the new one), where Diocletian grew cabbages.
