* Toledo is without any doubt the best preserved medieval city in Spain – there are no more historical and architectural monuments per square kilometer in the country. Naturally, over more than 2,000 years and a turbulent history, accompanied by natural disasters, sieges, assaults, rebellions, and changes of rulers, much has been rebuilt and lost. But for the last two hundred years, the townspeople have realized that the historical heritage is their wealth, cherish, cherish and multiply it. The architectural and historical monuments of Toledo today are the main source of income for the citizens. Our walk through the medieval city necessarily includes a visit to the Jewish quarter with its synagogues. The Synagogue de Transito was built in 1336-1357.. Its main prayer hall stands out with a magnificent cedar ceiling and exquisite stucco molding around the altar. By contrast, the synagogue of Santa Maria de la Blanca of the XII century. It has a modest snow-white interior, but it was built in the holy land, secretly brought from Palestine in flower pots. In the Jewish quarter, you can try marzipans and turrons, sweets of Islamic–Jewish origin, which are now considered typically Toledo. At the end of the journey through the Jewish quarter, we come to the pearl of medieval Toledo: the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. The monastery was built by order of the Catholic kings in the flaming Gothic style by architect Juan Guas. On the way back to Zocodover Square, if desired, we can immerse ourselves in the horrors of the Middle Ages by visiting the Museum of torture, where we will get acquainted with all kinds of original tools used by the Spanish inquisitors. After exploring the Inquisition, our way lies to the oldest (with the exception of the Alcantara Bridge) preserved building in the city: the Cristo de la Luz Mosque. Tired and hungry, we go to any restaurant (from a simple tavern with lunch for 11 €, to a restaurant with 2 * Michelin) and try dishes from Toledo quail or local venison.
