* The Latin Quarter is famous for its narrow old streets, churches, bookstores and cozy cafes, where there are a lot of young people and students!
Rene Viviani's small square offers the best view of Notre Dame Cathedral. In this square, the oldest tree in Paris grows — an acacia tree planted by the royal gardener Jean Robin in 1602, next to the former student church of Saint Julien le Povre, built even earlier than Notre Dame Cathedral itself, which once served as a venue for university meetings.
The glory of the Latin Quarter has always been made up of students and literary bohemians. In the Middle Ages, this place was called the Latin quarter, because student Latin was heard here much more often than any other language. There were many colleges in the quarter, which eventually "grew" into the famous Sorbonne University, the buildings of which are still located here.
Long before the students, the Romans appeared here more than 2000 years ago. They built a new city with a forum, a theater, and thermal baths, which was called Lutetia, literally mud and swamp. To this day, the Roman amphitheater and the thermal baths have been preserved, on which stands the magnificent mansion of the Clooney Abbey of the 15th century, built in the flaming Gothic style, which now houses the richest museum of the Clooney Middle Ages.
The Latin Quarter stands on one of the hills of Paris – the hill of Saint Genevieve, the famous patroness of Paris. There was once an abbey of the same name on this hill, which was closed and destroyed during the revolution. We inherited from him the famous Pantheon and one of the most beautiful churches in Paris, the Church of St. Stephen (Saint Etienne du Mont).
We will see all this and much more during our walk through this cozy and ancient quarter of Paris.
