Visit the mountain paradise. Velika planina is a popular excursion point that will quickly recharge your batteries and impress with its authenticity. We will take the cable car and then the chairlift to Velika planina (1600 m), where the largest shepherd village in Europe is preserved among the green pastures of the mountain plateau in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The rich natural and cultural heritage includes more than a hundred beautiful shepherd's huts. The pastoral settlement of Velika Planina is one of the oldest and best-preserved settlements of its kind in Europe. People first settled here three thousand years ago, in the Bronze Age, and shepherds began to graze cattle here in the Middle Ages. Shepherds still live here, especially in the summer from June to September, when they ascend from the valley with their cattle to pasture. Get to know life in the mountains and be filled with new, fresh energy. We will walk along the beautiful plateau, try alpine cheese and homemade delicacies. You will learn about the traditional cheese of love, called “trnič”, about a special type of cheese that has been made on Velika planina since ancient times. After visiting Velika planina, we return to the valley by cable car to the source of the mountain river Kamniška Bistrica. It is no coincidence that at the source of a turbulent alpine river, in the embrace of the mountains, former kings and presidents of Yugoslavia came on vacation to the royal hunting residence, designed by Slovenian UNESCO architect Jože Plečnik. If desired, we will order delicious traditional dumplings called “štruklji”, venison goulash or trout in a local inn in the middle of nature. On the way back we will stop in the medieval town of Kamnik, walk through the charming streets, see the monastery and the ruins of the old castle and discover the secrets of the city's history
