The construction of the fence was started in 1770 by decree of Catherine II and was completed only in 1777.  The authorship of this fence still causes heated debate in scientific circles. Work on the manufacture of a lattice with three gates began in the spring of 1771. The fence was mounted on 36 granite pillars made of Karelian granite. Granite vases and urns were placed along the fence.

Строительство ограды было начато в 1770 году по указу Екатерины II и завершено было только 1777 году.  Авторство этой ограды до сох пор вызывает бурные споры в научных кругах. Работы по изготовлению решётки с тремя воротами начались весной 1771 года. Ограда была установлена на 36 гранитных столбах, сделанных из карельского гранита. Вдоль ограды были установлены гранитные вазы и урны.
