From 1644 to 1805, 161, Cherkassk was the fourth combined arms center of the Don Cossacks. Throughout its history as a capital, Cherkassk has never been taken by the enemy.
It was in Cherkassk that the first artillery salute in the history of Russia was given in honor of the military victory of Russian weapons in 1696. And many other events took place for the first time on the Don land in Cherkassy town.
