Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 7 hours
* In 1323, at the source of the Neva River, a fortress of the same name was founded by Mr. Veliky Novgorod on Orekhov Island. For a long time it was the main outpost blocking the Swedes' way to the rich world of the Russian north, until in 1612 the fortress fell during the difficult period of the "Time of Troubles" for our country. With the loss of the fortress, the Muscovite state lost control of the Prince's lands and was cut off from the European seas until Peter the Great. Of course, an important milestone in the island's life was the return of the fortress to the borders of Russian statehood.
Peter the Great, who loved to betray symbolism to his achievements, solemnly renamed the fortress into the city of Shlisselburg, which in German means "key-city", and the key, in fact, to the Neva. With the subsequent capture of Nienstadt, the founding of St. Petersburg and Kronstadt, the strategic military position of the fortress ceased to matter, therefore, during Peter's lifetime, political criminals objectionable to the authorities, both real and imaginary, began to be exiled there.
In 1883, the fortress was completely converted into a real prison. At the same time, death sentences were carried out on the territory of the fortress, so in 1887, along with other Narodnaya Volya, Vladimir Lenin's brother, Alexander Ulyanov, was executed. In 1917, all the prisoners were released.
A separate line in the life of the island was the heroic resistance of the garrison of 350 soldiers during the Great Patriotic War, for five hundred days from 8.09.41 to 18.01.43 they held back the German troops, preventing them from blocking the most important route of besieged Leningrad - the Road of Life. Nowadays, a museum is located on the territory of the fortress.
