Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 1.5 hours
* On the opposite shore of Kiel fjord is the small village of Labe. Only 5,200 people live there.
And in the summer, several tens of thousands of tourists come there.
And not only to swim in the fjord and lie on the beautiful sandy beach, which, of course, is also worth doing here.
Many visitors who are interested in history come to Labe to visit the famous German naval memorial.
The monument to the fallen German sailors was inaugurated on May 30, 1936.
Adolf Hitler was present at the opening, but did not make a speech.
The National Socialists used the opening of the memorial for their ideological purposes. But in general, the Nazis were quite critical of this building, designed back in the days of the Weimar Republic. Hitler called it "a typical kitsch product."
After the Second World War, this memorial was dedicated to the dead sailors from all over the world.
The memorial consists of a museum and a tower 72 meters high, on which there is an observation deck with a very beautiful view of the village and the fjord.
In the lobby of the museum, guests are greeted by the phrase: "In memory of sailors of all nationalities who died at sea. For peaceful navigation in peaceful seas."
Memorials to the German Navy and civilian merchant shipping were created here. We will learn about the history of the German Navy and its present, about the fates of sailors and various vessels.
After the museum, we will visit the U-995 submarine.
An excursion to the Lab can be combined with a guided tour of Kiel.
