* Pisa is one of the most famous examples of the Middle Ages. From the 11th to the 13th century, Pisa's powerful fleet dominated the western Mediterranean. The trade union with Spain and North Africa contributed to the development of culture, and magnificent architectural monuments were created during this era. The Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) houses four world-famous masterpieces of medieval architecture such as the Baptistery, the Dome Cathedral, the Bell Tower (leaning Tower of Pisa) and the Monumental Cemetery. All these buildings create an almost cosmic harmony rising above the emerald-green lawns of the Pisa Field of Wonders (Campo dei Miracoli). The powerful architectural ensemble was created over several centuries. In 1987, the architectural ensemble was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
