The area is characterized by Etruscan burials and rock caves, which in Roman and medieval times were adapted to dwellings, stables or basements. Anyone who comes to this corner of Tuscany for the first time gets the impression that time has stopped. For example, we'll start our tour in Sorano with the fortress, passing through its gloomy dungeons full of traps and clever tricks of military architecture. A city with steep ascents and descents, in which no two houses or doors are the same. The streets are dotted with arches and openings of various shapes, made in different eras. All three towns are built of tufa, a volcanic stone.
