Экскурсия: По следам св. Мартина
From 150€ per person
Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 5 hours
* This historic walk will be radically different from the classic tours of the castles of the Loire. I will tell you the story of one of the first saints of Gaul (as France used to be called), who lived in these lands and baptized the local people in the 4th century AD.
During the tour, we will visit St. Gasian's Cathedral, where Martin served as bishop, and take a closer look at the remarkable stained glass windows from the very beginning of the 14th century, vividly telling about the life and death of the saint. You will find out why he himself did not live in the bishop's palace next to the cathedral, but in a cell of the Marmoutier cave monastery, which he specially founded next to Tours. We will visit the city of St. Martin, Martinopolis, see the crypt with his shrine, the remains of an ancient basilica, visit the most famous ancient square of Tours, and note the half-timbered houses richly decorated with wooden sculptures.
We will end our trip in a small village at the junction of the historical provinces of Touraine and Anjou, 50 km away. to the west of Tours, where St. Martin rested from his earthly labors, and where his funeral service was held. Finally, you will be able to admire from the hill a stunning view of the arrow of the confluence of the Loire and one of its vassal tributaries of the Vienne.
