Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 5 hours
* Mentioned in Homer's Iliad as Solim, Termessos was one of the few cities in Asia Minor that did not submit to Alexander the Great, successfully repelling the assault of 333 BC. During the Roman Empire, Termessos was independent, but maintained close ties with Rome and eventually existed until the 13th century with virtually no damage. The ancient fortress city itself lies higher than its modern namesake on the slope of Mount Gelluk (1110 m), within the Gelluk-Dag National Park. According to all reports, it was abandoned very early, probably after the terrible earthquake of 243 A.D. and since then it has practically not been excavated — all its monuments have been preserved in the same form as they were many centuries ago.
There are several famous tombs in the city. The most famous of the tombs is the tomb of Aslan. The tomb is built on a pedestal and has reliefs depicting the head of a Gorgon Medusa, theatrical masks and other ornaments. The second famous tomb is the monument-mausoleum of the warrior Alchetas. The Hellenistic theater in this area is also of great interest.: It is built into the rock and could accommodate up to 4,000 spectators.
If you climb to the top of the theater hill, you will see a panorama starting from the Pamphylia Valley to Antalya. Hadrian's Profilon (monumental gate) and six temples are located here. Among these temples are the temple of Soletheus and the temple of Artemis (2nd century AD).
