Description
Type: Single-day activity
Duration: 1.5 hours
* The Chekist town is a unique quarter in the city center, where several cultural strata are intertwined. First of all, it is the constructivist architecture of the early 1930s and modern street art. During one tour, you will learn the history of the Chekist Town, the features of its architecture and see many interesting street art objects.
The Chekist Town is a complex of 14 buildings built in the early 1930s for NKVD officers. The architectural dominant of the Town is the House of exemplary lifestyle for the lonely and small—family, which was popularly called the "Horseshoe", now it is the Iset hotel. The complex included all the necessary infrastructure for residents: a department store, a canteen, a clinic, a sauna, a laundry room, a kindergarten, and a boiler room. This solution corresponded to the ideology of communism and the task of educating a "new type" of person, whose everyday life should be fully integrated into society (the concept of the house-commune), and individualistic needs receded into the background.
One of the characteristic features of constructivist architecture, which is perfectly visible in the Town of the Chekists, is the bay windows that were in every apartment. Bay windows had a specific practical significance — to increase the illumination and insolation of apartments, which in turn contributed to the prevention of tuberculosis — in the 1930s this problem was acute. The residential buildings had exits to both the courtyard and the street, while the street door was always locked. Some residents of a particularly high position had a personal key to this door. All apartments were gasified and telephoned.
