Kandalaksha Nature Reserve. Department of Environmental Education
Detailed description
In the north, in the city of Kandalaksha, a nature reserve was created to protect gaga from destruction. Pre-revolutionary Russia was known as the main exporter of eiderdown for several centuries. But all this time, the fluff was collected during mass egg laying, in addition, eider eggs were collected, and the birds themselves were often killed. Due to such predatory organization of fishing, already in the middle of the XVIII century, the number of gags in the Barents and White Seas began to decrease.
