Detailed description

The history of the church dates back to 1526, when St. Theodoret of Kola built a church at the mouth of the right bank of the Niva River in honor of the birth of John the Baptist. The temple was rebuilt several times: in 1548, the Kandalaksha monastery was built next to the church, but on May 23, 1589, the church, monastery and peasant houses were looted by the Swedes, who killed 450 people. Between 1768 and 1801, a new church was built on the site of the destroyed church. The church existed until 1940, when it was closed due to anti-clerical movements. The new building of the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist was built next to the site of the historic church and consecrated in 2005.
