Admiralty house
Detailed description
The Admiralty is located on the Neva River embankment. Designed by Peter the Great himself, the building was founded on November 5, 1704. Peter the Great decided to build a new shipbuilding plant on the banks of the Neva River, after unsuccessful attempts to bring newly built ships from shipyards located on Lake Ladoga. Initially, the Admiralty was a U-shaped building facing the Neva River from the inside. Then the shipyard was reinforced with additional fortifications – five bastions with cannons, moats and an earthen rampart. The Admiralty combined the functions of defense, shipbuilding and fleet management. Twenty-eight statues are installed above the colonnade. The statues represent the four elements, the four seasons, the four directions of the wind, Isis, the patroness of shipbuilding, and Urania, the muse of astronomy. And in the center of the composition, the god Neptune presents a trident, a symbol of dominion over the sea.
To Peter I.
