Kutafya Tower
Detailed description
The Kutafya Tower is considered to be the only surviving branch tower of the Moscow Kremlin. It was built in 1516 by a Milanese architect. Now the tower is a genre sculpture surrounded by a moat and a river. The historical site was often reconstructed. During the years of its first creation, the tower was a formidable barrier for the besiegers of the fortress. Many parts of the vault were gradually dismantled. In the seventeenth century, the Kutafia tower was completed with two-horned battlements and a tent-type roof. Today, the arched gates of the sculpture serve as a passage for tourists and locals. The building is decorated with pointed open windows, white columns with rounded teeth. The bottom of the tower is completely plastered and painted white. The sides of the passage are decorated with tile masonry in the shape of circles.
