Almshouse of the Brusnitsyn Tannery
Detailed description
The almshouse was founded with funds from the Brusnitsin family and included a nursing home for 120 people, an orphanage for 180 orphans, an elementary school and a hospital. When Emperor Nicholas II visited this institution, he expressed gratitude to the brothers for giving this charitable institution to the city. The building has a U-shape. The church was located in a raised central sacristy on the third floor (closed in 1922). Living quarters are located in the wings of the building. A small chapel with a hipped roof adjoined the central part. The building was surrounded by a landscaped garden with numerous bosquettes, and in the northwest was the cemetery and chapel of the Brusnitsin family. The garden railings and floor lamps remained untouched. After the revolution, the orphanage housed a secondary school, and since 1944, the Higher Military Naval School (now Admiral Makarov State Maritime University).
