The mansion of J.M. Schlossberg 1911
Detailed description
In 1910-1911, engineer A.N. Zeligson built a mansion for the merchant of the first guild, Yakov Zilosberg, head of the office for the sale of manufactured goods. A.N. Zeligson was born in Poland in 1890. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers and built a number of buildings in Moscow from 1907 to 1917. After the revolution, he returned to his homeland, and since 1956, the house has been the residence of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Russia.
The small mansion built by Zelingson on Povarskaya Street was designed in a Renaissance style rare for Moscow. It has a simple, three-dimensional composition with shallow stucco, contrasting with the large volume and decorative forms of the neighboring Mindovsky mansion, built earlier by Kekushev. The street facade is decorated with various stucco patterns. The large windows are framed with garlands of flowers and fruits, and the decorative draughts between the first and second floors are decorated with lion masks. This is a tribute to Zeligson Kekushev, who specialized in lions.
