The guardhouse on the Haymarket Square
Detailed description
The place where the house on Sadovaya Street is located is the only surviving building in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 18th century, a guardhouse was built on Sennaya Square to house military guards. In 1818-1820, architect V.I. Beretti built a new building, which has been preserved to this day. Fyodor Dostoevsky was arrested here in March 1874 for violating censorship. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, serfs were publicly flogged in front of him.
