Naval Barracks - Kalinkinsky Naval Hospital
Detailed description
The naval hospital was founded by Peter the Great in 1715 and was located on the Vyborg side. In 1836, the Shakhovskaya House near Kalinkin Bridge was bought for the hospital, which became the Admiralty Hospital in 1880. The adjacent naval barracks were transferred to the hospital. Initially, the hospital consisted of departments and 300 beds. At the beginning of the 19th century, due to the expansion, the naval hospital located next to the Medical and Surgical Academy had to be moved to another part of the city. The main building was a long, narrow, two-story brick building designed for 330 patients. Today, the Naval Hospital is the largest medical and scientific center in the country. Since 1967, it has been awarded the title of the highest cultural institution. In 1975, on the 30th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, a memorial to Baltic doctors who died in the Great Patriotic War was erected in the courtyard of the hospital designed by sculptor G.A.Cherniyenko.
