Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist
Detailed description
The Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist on Kamenny Island was built in 1778 by architect Yuri Felten in the Neo-Gothic style. The temple is a red brick building with a pointed dome. Above the entrance there is a bell tower in which there is a belfry, and at the corners there are four columns supporting a four-sided tent. St. John's Church is notable for the fact that three children of Alexander Pushkin were baptized there. During the Soviet era, the church's property was looted, and the mural and the remaining decorations were destroyed during a fire. In 1935, thanks to the efforts of architect Yu. According to Stravinsky, the temple building was taken under state protection. In 1989, the building was returned to the parish, and in November, services resumed in the church.
