People 's House Theater
Detailed description
In the summer of 1896, architect Alexander Pomerantsev presented a project for a building whose facades combined elements of classical style and Art Nouveau, and the roof was crowned with a glass dome. The Prince of Oldenburg was interested in the project. To bring the idea to life, architect G.I. Lutsedarsky was invited, who made his own adjustments. The original interior design is his merit. He did not hide the metal structures that supported the building, but used them to create a modern Art Nouveau space. The shape of the pavilion has been changed. In order to reduce the load on the frame, cork bricks imported from Hamburg were used as building material for the construction of the upper part of the walls. In the 1910s, the Western Building was added to it, called the People's Auditorium, whose reinforced concrete dome became the largest in the world. The building has been equipped with modern amenities, from electric lighting to a fire protection system. The People's House has become a popular cultural center. After the revolution, the building was given to the theater. Nowadays, the building houses a Music hall and a Planetarium.
