Kavos Apartment Building
Detailed description
Leonty Benois built a mansion in the Art Nouveau style for his cousin Evgeny Tsarevich Kavos in 1896-1897. The mayor approved the construction project on August 12, 1896, and construction was completed the following year. Due to the usual techniques of the time, the main decoration of the facades was not stucco and plaster, but the contrast of colors and textures of the finishing materials: natural stone, granite chips with terracotta reliefs and cement. For the first time, ancient limestone was used on the territory of the city - it is folded into a high basement of the building, occupying almost the entire height of the floor. The small two-storey mansion was highly appreciated by contemporaries for its expressive "New French style" and decoration. In the fall of 1907, the building was among the top five winners of the city council's "house beauty contest."
