Detailed description
The rostral column was erected in 1805-1810. French architect Tom de Tomon worked on the construction project. There are two columns on the arrow of Vasilyevsky Island. They are decorated with ship roasters. This decor has become a symbol that speaks to the power and greatness of the country's navy and is a reference to the custom of the ancient Romans to decorate columns with roasters of captured ships.
