Rostral column
Detailed description
Two rostral columns were built in 1805-1810 according to the design of the French architect Thomas de Thomond, and Vasilyevsky Island with a ship's rostral on each side. It is a symbol of the power and greatness of the state's navy and a reference to the Roman custom of decorating columns with rosters of defeated enemy ships.
