The house of master stonemason Samson Sukhanov
Detailed description
The house is located on the embankment of the river Buckle opposite the Berdov Bridge. It was built in 1807. It belonged to Samson Sukhanov, a stonemason and builder of St. Petersburg. It was he who was directly involved in the construction of the Mikhailovsky Castle, Kazan and St. Isaac's Cathedrals, carried out stone work on the Arrow of Vasilyevsky Island, and made the pedestal for Minin and Pozharsky in Moscow. Surprisingly, Sukhanov, unable to write and read, invented a new way of mining granite, which allowed him to mine the stone in whole slabs. Granite was a favorite material for the craftsman, which is probably why the basement of the building, the bases of the columns on the facade, and the consoles in the mezzanine are made of granite. The spiral staircase with granite steps is still preserved. Now you can enter the front door of the house without obstacles and admire the works of the great stonemason.
