The Shevchenko Museum Apartment is the only museum exhibition in St. Petersburg dedicated to the work of T. Shevchenko, poet, writer, artist and engraver, an outstanding cultural figure of the 19th century. The workshop's furnishings, which feature Shevchenko's works and personal belongings, are recreated from the memoirs of his contemporaries. In the museum, visitors can see original graphic works, early editions of poems, copies and reproductions of paintings from all periods of Shevchenko's work, books about the life and work of the artist and poet. The Academy of Arts building on the University Embankment, opposite the pier with Egyptian sphinxes, is a memorial building of the late 18th century, built by architect J.B. Vallen della Motte, the founder of classicism in Russia.
